Of Oil and Iron - Version Beta 0.5 Release Notes [FINAL BETA BEFORE FULL RELEASE]

Greetings Ironclads,

Of Oil and Iron Version Beta 0.5.4 has been released. You can download it now!

This will be the last beta before a full release. Of Oil and Iron is at a stage of final completion, it's just a grammar and stats balance pass left to do, and some other bits I'll note down below.

But first, what's changed since Beta 0.4?

  • Added a "Key Concepts" section covering the following:

    • Activations

    • Re-rolls

    • Natural rolls

    • Dice types

    • Improbable results

    • Measuring

    • Line of Sight

    • Cover

    • Firing arcs

    • Simultaneous effects

    • Rule priority

    • Comparing types of Rig Control Terminals

  • Layout changes across the entire book, expanded to 116 pages

  • Tables re-designed, they are now easier to read!

  • Added a new condition called "Rupture", a damage over time effect that persists until repaired

  • Added back a new "Example Turn" section, demonstrating new mechanics

  • "Rig Operating Manual" - this will eventually be taken out of the rulebook and made into its own document. For now it exists within the main rulebook.

  • Rigs get their own full pages with new artwork and lore for each Rig!

  • Weapons balance pass

  • Equipment balance pass

  • Objectives - changed how they work, consolidated objective ideas, new objective types that can be slotted into Engagements as part of the modular mission system - no Engagement will truly be the same!

  • Engagements cleaned up and standardised

  • Adjusted how Ironclads level up in campaign mode

  • Added a Rig painting gallery, painted models by yours truly

  • Added a Rules Glossary

  • Plus many many tiny changes which I haven't managed to write down while working - sorry, they must be discovered!

For this release I won't be updating the cards, so if you would like to play with the new stats, please use the printer-friendly Rig Control Terminals.

On this note, they are much easier to fill out, since the format of the Rig stats pages matches the flow of the RCT, so they can be filled out linearly. Much easier - no more cross-checking stats.

I have some test prints of this version of the book coming next week - just in time for UK Games Expo, where I will be bringing them with me to show off the game. While I will not be exhibiting myself, Of Oil and Iron will be on show at the Natural Twenty Tables exhibit!

If you're at UKGE, check out their stand for some live Of Oil and Iron presence! I'll be kicking around sometimes, but I'm also going mainly to explore other exhibits.

Well this is it, the final run to the Of Oil and Iron V1 release. If you have any feedback, please let me know - the June deadline is nigh approaching.

Cheers!
Scott
